Somewhere on Okinawa, there’s someone with access to a Marine base who either really can’t get over racism or really likes to troll people.
A movie theater at the Camp Hansen in Okinawa was vandalized on Sunday when an individual changed the marquee to something that can be described as nothing short of a racial slur.
Originally promoting the Black Panther film (which has a predominantly black cast), the AAFES marquee was altered to say “Phat Black Ni**er.”
US Marine officials report that the slur has since been removed.
“Marine Corps Installations Pacific is aware of an incident that occurred aboard Camp Hansen involving the posting of a racial slur on an AAFES marquee,” Marine officials said in a statement issued Monday afternoon, provided by the Stars and Stripes. “Such actions and language are in direct contradiction to the core values of honor, courage, and commitment that we stand for as United States Marines. This type of behavior is not tolerated by the Marine Corps.”
It is unknown how the perpetrator managed to access the marquee, though it is presumed that they somehow gained access to the roof.
Camp Hansen is home to the home 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, 9th Engineer Support Battalion and 12th Marine Regiment, respectively.
