The US Marine Corps have officially banned affiliation with white supremacy movements and sharing of “revenge porn” involving female colleagues.
The Corps has updated several service-wide orders -many of which haven’t been updated in over a decade- which will tighten accountability, creating guidelines to quickly separate Marines who don’t fall in line.
“As a result of both Marines United and Charlottesville, we included the additional categories of wrongful distribution or broadcasting of an intimate image and dissident and protest activity (including supremacist activity) to ensure Marine Corps policy was clear on these destructive behaviors,” said Yvonne Carlock, a spokeswoman for Marine Corps Manpower and Reserve Affairs.
According to Task and Purpose, offenders will not be the only ones punished- anyone who looks the other way or fails to report their fellow Marines will face discipline as well.
“This order also clearly articulates all Marines and sailors who see or hear about these behaviors and do nothing about them are condoning such conduct,” said Major Craig Thomas, who is also with Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “Leaders who condone prohibited activities and conduct will be held accountable for their actions and/or inactions.”
The order follows up on a DoD-wide order from SecDef Jim Mattis himself, who demanded in a memo that the US military improve individual and unit discipline.
“Enforcing standards is a critical component of making our force more lethal. Our leaders must uphold proven standards,” Mattis wrote. “They should know the difference between a mistake and a lack of discipline. If a subordinate makes a mistake, leaders should learn to coach them better. But we must not tolerate or ignore lapses in discipline, for our enemies will benefit if we do not correct and appropriately punish substandard conduct. Time, inconvenience, or administrative burdens are no excuse for allowing substandard conduct to persist.”
