A US Marine veteran has been reported killed in the Ukraine after he took on a contract to fight the Russians.
Willy Joseph Cancel, who was part of a private military company operation when he was reportedly killed by enemy fire.
“He wanted to go over because he believed in what Ukraine was fighting for, and he wanted to be a part of it to contain it there so it didn’t come here, and that maybe our American soldiers wouldn’t have to be involved in it,” Cancel’s mother, Rebecca Cabrera told CNN.
While it is believed that Cancel was killed, no body has turned up as of yet.
“They haven’t found his body,” Cabrera reportedly said. “They are trying, the men that were with him, but it was either grab his body or get killed, but we would love for him to come back to us.”
According to the New York Post, Cancel served in the US Marine Corps before becoming a corrections officer.
He signed up with the unknown PMC earlier this year.
Cancel leaves behind a 7-month-old baby and a wife.
