An active-duty US Marine based out of North Carolina was arrested after he brought firearms, ammunition and body armor to Haiti.
Jacques Yves Sebastien Duroseau was reportedly coming to Haiti to teach military personnel how to shoot better, according to indictment documents, when he was caught bringing eight guns with him to the Caribbean nation.
According to the Miami Herald, one source claimed that Duroseau “wanted to help Haiti and wants to become President of Haiti.”
Duroseau brought five handguns -mostly made by Beretta and Sig Sauer- and three rifles with him, as well as a supply of ammunition.
Haitian officials claimed the telltale hard-sided containers used to transport firearms were the reason they looked into the matter.
US investigators claimed the Marine told them he was planning to be arrested in order to “gain a platform to make a statement.”
Naval Criminal Investigative Servicemembers in Haiti claimed Duroseau wanted to “wear the uniform of the military that’s been established” and “defeat the thugs that have been creating a little bit of part of the instability in Haiti.”
Duroseau was made a public figure by the USMC in the early 2010s, when he was trapped in his home country of Haiti for four days following the 2010 earthquake.
“It took me a while to find [my parents] because it was impossible to drive so you had to walk wherever you were going,” Duroseau said, according to the Marine Corps. “There’s a lot of stuff you wished you didn’t have to see. There were many dead and the smell was the worst. It was very sad to watch and experience.”
Duroseau had always wanted to be a Marine ever since he saw them deploy to Haiti during a civil conflict.
“When I was a kid, I saw the Marines back home [because] we had a little war going on, that was the first time I saw them and I hope to be one of them,” he said. “Since that day I had it in the back of my head where I wanted to be a US Marine.”
Haiti is under a US arms embargo, making it difficult for guns to be imported into the country without authorization from the Haiti National Police.
