NAHA, OKINAWA PREF. – A U.S. Marine was arrested after being stopped at a traffic checkpoint in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture.
Lance Cpl. Melbin Leonardo Nunez, 20, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of drunken driving. The Marine is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan.
Okinawa Prefectural Police set up the checkpoint around 3 a.m. on Sunday and stopped Nunez after smelling alcohol on his breath. The breathalyzer results showed his blood-alcohol level to be three times the legal limit according to the Japan Times.
Nunez admitted to local authorities that he was drinking earlier, but told police he was a construction worker. Eventually, his driver’s license was processed where it was discovered he was a US Marine.
