The two assault rifles lost by a US Marine unit at Camp Lejeune are still missing, and the Marine Corps has given up on actively looking for them.
The rifles belonged to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, and their loss resulted in a rumor that 3/6 canceled holiday leave block for all Marines in the unit.
“All the Marines that put in their requests in properly were afforded holiday leave,” 2nd Marine Division Spokesman 1LT Dan Linfante said.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has taken over the hunt, which may indicate that the rifles went missing on purpose.
According to the Marine Corps Times, there are no current plans to keep looking for the weapons.
In addition to rifles, a ballistic vest is reported to have gone missing as well.
