11/19/15 Update: Marine Lance Cpl. Layne Johnson, originally from Modesto, was killed in a car crash on Wednesday. He was driving from Twentynine Palms back to Fresno when he fell asleep and drifted off the highway. Johnson crashed into a guardrail and then a highway sign pole.

Johnson was on leave and had returned to Twentynine Palms to prepare for a Marine Corps ball, picking up a new pants and gloves, according to the Modesto Bee. He was en route to get back to his girlfriend in Fresno before they hopped a flight for the Vegas for the event.

“Even before he left, I told him to sleep at the base; I didn’t have a good feeling about this,” said girlfriend Kylee Halladay.

Johnson had purchased a promise ring for his girlfriend while he was with her earlier that weekend. The couple met when they attended Enochs High School in Modesto.

“He always filled everyone with laughter and yes, he did show off how strong he was by using me as a weight,” Halladay said. “He was so confident in everything he did and he was so proud to be a Marine.”

11/18/2015: Early reports from the California Highway Patrol say the 19-year-old likely fell asleep and drifted off the freeway and hit a guard rail and launched into the air.

CHP Officer Ryan Pederson says, “It struck the sign about 4 feet up, on the roof side of the vehicle. Unfortunately the driver sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision” according to yourcentralvalley.com

The Marine’s name will be released upon notification of his family.
