A US Marine Machine Gunner was disarmed by a North Carolina State Trooper after a high-speed chase nearly turned into a shootout over the weekend.

Trooper Ryan Onofrio clocked Lance Corporal Michael Sells going over 123 MPH outside of the town of Newport.

Taking pursuit, Onofrio chased the 19-year-old Marine until the suspect crashed his vehicle.

Exiting his vehicle with intent to arrest Sells, Onofrio discovered Sells trying to load a rifle with a loose round he had on his person. Acting quickly, Onofrio disarmed the Marine and took him into custody before any gunplay could come into effect.

Sells was driving a Nissan 350Z and was not injured in the crash. He was arrested and held in custody in Beaufort until he was turned over to his command.

Sells has been charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, speeding, improper passing, failing to heed lights and sirens, exceeding the posted speed limit and resist, obstruct and delay.

He was given a $1,000 bond and was due in court yesterday.

According to WITN, the Camp Lejeune Marine is an Ohio native and was attached to Weapons Platoon, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines.
