Camp and Orange County firefighters are battling a vegetation on Cristianitos Road near the San Mateo Campground, according to base officials.
Marine officials shared via Twitter just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, that the was 10 to 15 acres. Just before 8 p.m., the had grown to 300 acres, according to a tweet by the base.
The Orange County Authority said they sent a strike team to assist. There are “multiple off base resources” fighting the and more are planned, Camp said.
“ north of Cristianitos Rd is heading away from the base,” the camp’s Facebook page shared at about 7:35 p.m. “Multiple assets on the ground and in the air are responding both from the Camp Pen side and the San Clemente side.”
As evening fell, planes began dropping suppressant onto the blaze.
Base officials added that the blaze was not on the Orange County side but the air support was making “good progress” and more drops were planned.
