Will she or won’t she? The anticipation is simply unbearable. It’s been a growing trend that celebrities accept online invitations from military personnel, looking for famous dates, to their balls.
Ronda Rousey did just that in September, when Marine Jarrod Haschert invited the former UFC champ to be his date for the Commandant’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball, tomorrow.
While the event is a day away, Jarrod, who’s stationed at Camp Lejeune, told a NJ radio station that he still has not heard from Rousey.
“It would be sad if he got all dressed up, expected a date and doesn’t have one,” said his mother. ‘All I know is I’m going in the hopes she’ll be there,” she added.
Haschert’s video post at the end of the summer got 4 million views. “You are my celebrity crush. I love everything you do and think that you are a phenomenal person which is why it would be my honor to take you to the Marine Ball,” he said in the video.
Back in September, when a TMZ reporter asked if Jarrod was her type, Rousey responded: “He’s cute. He’s gotta be a gentleman, I’m not a first date kind of girl.”
Since accepting Hashert’s invite, Rousey was brutally beaten by Holly Holm in Australia during their championship match. She hasn’t been seen much since, and in an interview with ESPN magazine, Rousey said she felt “embarrassed” by the loss and a first-round hit “knocked a couple of teeth loose.”
While Rousey insists she is a woman of her word, rumors began swirling a few months ago, that she might back out, after she started dating fellow UFC fighter Travis Browne.
Rousey claimed that wasn’t an issue and her silence may just be a part of some elaborate ruse lifted from a Hollywood fairytale.
When accepting Haschert’s invitation, Rousey made a reference to a movie scene from the Drew Barrymore hit, “Never Been Kissed.” During the scene, Barrymore’s character vows to stand in the middle of a baseball field and wait for her crush, Sam, to come kiss her. As the deadline approaches and she’s about to give up, Sam shows up and they kiss– of course.
The former UFC champ pondered about how she might make a dramatic entrance to the ball. “Do I call him,” she asked. “Or do I set up a time and place like Never Been Kissed and wait until the clock runs out and be like ‘I’m here!’
I guess we will have to wait and find out tomorrow.
