One month after a deadly hit-and-run involving a US Marine, the Maryland State Police has more than tripled the reward for information about the crash.

Cpl. William Kyle Ferrell was killed when police say a vehicle —believed to be some kind of truck towing a trailer– struck him and took off.

Police have received contributions from the National Warriors Foundation, the Maryland Troopers Association and an anonymous donor. Their original Crime Stoppers reward of $2,000 has now increased to $6,500.

The Marine was trying to help a driver–during a heavy downpour–  who was broken down near Thurmont on Sept 29.

Ferrell was assisting the disabled motorist on the shoulder of U.S. 15 near Auburn Road when the hit and run happened, according to the Frederick News Post. Witnesses told police the driver who hit Ferrell “briefly stopped after the crash” – about 100 yards down the road, but drove away a few minutes later.

The 21-year-old corporal, from Carthage, North Carolina, was assigned to Camp David last year. Ferrell was a trained infantryman and Marine Corps security force guard during his time in the corps, according to Marine Barracks Washington, D.C.

When he was younger, Ferrell was a volunteer member with Carthage Fire and Rescue. “Ferrell loved to help people and got along with everyone,” said Fire Chief Brian Tyner.

“The command is heartbroken by the loss of one of our own, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Cpl. William Ferrell,” Col. Benjamin Watson, commanding officer at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., said shortly after his death.
