A US Marine officer is now marketing herself as a “queer veteran” in the congressional ring- with a pro-gun control platform.

Janessa Goldbeck, a 34-year-old USMC captain who left the Corps six weeks ago in order to enter the world of politics, has set her sights on a congressional seat on behalf of the State of California.

Despite claiming to be a pro-gun Democrat, the Marine veteran is pushing to ensure “military-style” weapons stay out of the hands of American citizens.

“I’m a gun owner. I support the Second Amendment and I know that guns are critical tools of our military,” Goldbeck said in an interview with BuzzFeed on Wednesday. “I carried an M16 and an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in training, but I don’t believe they belong in the homes of the civilians.”

It should be noted that the select-fire M16 and the automatic M249 are incredibly rare in US hands, and require considerable amounts of money, paperwork and time to acquire- if you can find a buyer willing to sell one that was made before 1986.

The seven-year Marine veteran expressed her love of federal government, and felt that running for office to represent California’s 53rd District was a natural path.

“My passion and my experience have all been at the federal level,” Goldbeck said. “The first thing that came to my head was, ‘Why not?’”

After university, Goldbeck worked as a human rights activist lobbying Congress to end the genocide in Darfur. After entering the Marines, Goldbeck participated in a government study that ultimately led to women being able to serve in combat roles.

In regards to her firearm policy, however, her views may not resonate well with the majority of veterans, despite being a popular line of thought in the Golden State.

“If you want to fire a military-grade weapon, join the Marines,” Goldbeck said. “We’re always looking for a few good people.”
