The brother of a fallen US Marine took his own life during the one-year anniversary memorial service, one year after his sibling was killed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

It was at the memorial service for LCPL Kareem Nikoui that the Marine’s older brother, Dakota Halverson, committed suicide.

“The older brother of one of the 13 KIA in Kabul recently killed himself at his little brother’s memorial,” Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) tweeted on Saturday. “Please pray for his family. There MUST be accountability for this continued carnage,” he added.

Nikoui was killed by a suicide bomber outside of the Kabul airport on August 26, 2021. The incident remains mired in controversy.

Rep. Waltz set up a GoFundMe to cover Halverson’s funeral expenses. Around $22,000 was raised as of Sunday.

According to the Daily Wire, the brothers’ mother, Shana Chappell, has been an outspoken critic of the Biden Administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal.

“Any donations for his burial and services would be greatly appreciated as he wanted to be buried next to his brother Kareem,” wrote Chappell on the crowdfunding site. “His family and I want to honor his wishes.”
