The US Navy has initiated an investigation, trying to get a better picture as to why a US Marine was fatally shot while on sentry duty in Georgia last month.

Sergeant Derek Diesel, who was shot on August 18 while performing sentry duties at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, left behind a wife and child.

Diesel was reportedly shot in the head, and the incident was not reported to the public until earlier this week.

It is unknown if the perpetrators of the attack were foreign agents, who would want to gain access to the classified submarines that Diesel and his fellow Marines were tasked with protecting.

According to the Stars And Stripes, the Marine had served since 2014, and was known to play as hard as he worked.

“Derek was a hardworking, passionate leader both at home and throughout his service in the Marine Corps,” his obituary states. “He loved his family, friends, and country. His hobbies included spending time with his wife and daughter, working on their house, cars and motorcycles. He was also a member of Rival [Motorcycle Club] and enjoyed riding with his brothers in the club.”
