Legendary retired Marine General James Mattis has gone on record in saying that he has never considered running for President of the United States in 2016, despite a growing movement to draft him.
According to Politico, the 65-year-old General went public about the possibility of running for office during an event Friday hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in DC.
“No, I haven’t given any thought to it,” he said. When prodded about whether or not he would actually run, he responded “I think people like you know that better than I do.”
Republican operatives terrified of the idea of Donald Trump becoming the next leader of the free world have been kicking around the idea of Mattis running as an independent alternative to the business tycoon — having recently sent Mattis a series of strategic memos in an effort to coax him into running.
Mattis is known for being an honest and capable leader that rarely lets political correctness get in his way.
“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil,” he said in 2005. “You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.”
Mattis -a beloved figure not only in the US Marines Corps but the military as a whole- has been hailed by service members and journalists alike as a “fatherly” figure to his troops, consummate professional and a natural-born leader, earning him names like “Mad Dog” and “Warrior Monk”.
While it is not certain that Mattis will actually run, fans of the combat General are likely to be at the edge of their seats until the election comes to an end, hoping with bated breath that Mad Dog accepts a four-year TDY assignment to the White House.
