A US Marine with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed aboard the USS Essex is reported to have fallen overboard during “routine operations” off the Philippine coast.
Both the United States and Philippine militaries are on the hunt for the missing Marine, combing 3,000 square nautical miles with ships and aircraft. In addition, the Essex has been scoured by the crew for any possible trace of their lost comrade.
“It’s an all-hands effort to find our missing Marine,” Navy Amphibious Squadron One Captain Gerald Olin said in a command release. “All of our sailors, Marines, and available assets aboard the USS Essex have been and will continue to be involved in this incredibly important search and rescue operation.”
According to the Marine Corps Times, Olin is currently overseeing the search for the Marine, who went missing on Thursday somewhere within the vicinity of the Sulu Sea and the Surigao Strait.
The family of the Marine has been notified, but the Corps is currently withholding personal information at this time.
