A spokesman for the Marines United Facebook group that gained controversy after disseminating nude photos of female service members claims the PR fiasco is proof why women shouldn’t be allowed to join the infantry.

Marine veteran and Marines United spokesman Marshall Chiles spoke out in defense of the 30,000 group members after it was discovered they shared photos of nude servicewomen and civilians without their consent.

Chiles blames the scandal on a few bad apples and says it shows why gender integration is a bad idea, according to the Daily Beast.

“I think the exploitation of sharing nudity of other service members online will eventually get solved, but what I’m saying is that even before then, you still have special cases going on inside units. So when you integrate women, those numbers are going to spike up within those infantry units and that’s just more things for the Marine Corps to worry about. And it’s not just the Corps, but the Army as well,” said Chiles, a former sergeant who served in the Marines for over half a decade.

Integration is not completed yet. There’s a lot of things we don’t know, but what we do know is that they’re these seven sexual-assault cases that happened when the Marine Corps tried to integrate,” Chiles said, referring to a 2015 sexual assault case in an experimental gender-mixed infantry unit. “So what does this have to do with the online community?”

“You had 30,000 members in an online group, you’re always going to have your 1 or 10 percent that are going to do things wrong, that go against the Marine Corps and its standards. If you have a bunch of males together and this happens, just think about what can happen if you add women to that. I see this turning into a big problem for both sides [males and females] and the integrity of the Marine Corps wouldn’t stand just based off what happened with Marines United,” he said.

Chiles said he doesn’t think women can’t do the job; the real question is if the USMC is prepared to keep up with and prevent sexual assault.

Murder is illegal on the streets of America, but people still do it. So sexual crimes are still going to happen in the military regardless of how they [Pentagon and Congress] try to clamp down on it or revise [policies]. It’s still going to happen and at that point, I don’t really question the physicality of women. I question the logistics of the Marine Corps and if they will be able to keep up with it [sexual crimes],” Chiles said.

Chiles claims that much animosity towards women likely comes from how civilian leadership abrasively forced gender integration on the military.

“Sen. Elizabeth Warren was a prime example, pushing for a co-ed boot camp and she questioned the commandant on why we’re not doing that,” he told the Daily Beast. “So I think it’s coming down from civilian leadership and I think the Marine Corps should stand up for itself and say, ‘Look, we have been winning wars for America since 1775. Why should we continue to change the wheels when they’re not broke? We need to look at American defense first before looking at integration.”

In the end, Chiles said that Marines United has accomplished its goal- to be a sounding board for disgruntled and isolated male Marines to come together and recreate the camaraderie felt in the military.

“Marines United is a group of males coming together who can understand each other. The purpose of the group is to create camaraderie, creating that same feeling that we had when we were all in the military,” he said.

(Editor’s note: The original article mistakenly stated, “Chiles directed his blame of the incident toward the forced-integration of women into combat units.”  This was incorrect and the article has been revised.)

    1. Wow… this guy served for a whole “half a decade”… certainly he must know what he’s talking about. Great argument… that women being integrated in the armed forces is the cause of the problem… not the men who commit the crimes.

    2. If the website is for males only, then it should be called “Males who call themselves Marines, but don’t conduct themselves like Marines, United”, but it is not Marines United because then female Marines would be allowed to join on their terms and not be degraded. Male Marines are wonderful hard working, servicemembers and that vast majority of those males do not act like some of the members of your group have. They love their mother, sister, wives, and daughters. They seek to set an example for their sons and not embarrass their family. The conduct of some of your members is a national disgrace. We have servicemembers who are deployed worldwide right now, but the attention has gone to the immaturity of the conduct done by some of the members in this group. The Commandant had to answer for your actions before the Senate Arms Committee as well as the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, You are not helping them or the future of the Marine Corps. It makes it hard for the Marines to recruit both males and female when the public starts to believe that’s how Marines are, when this is isolated to a few immature males. This group has wasted tax payer dollars with lengthy FBI and NCIS investigations and seems to think this is a game. Nothing is private on the internet and what’s great is that uploads have properties, properties that can be tracked. My prayers go out to the ladies whose photos were used without their consent and they are being stalked, threatened with rape, and had to move from their communities or even change their name. I really hope anyone involved with the photos is subjected to the UCMJ to the fullest extent, If any girl is under age 18, someone is going to prison for child pornography..

    3. As far as integration goes, getting rid of women in the Marine Corps will not solve the sexual assault problem. If a person is a predator that feels entitled to sex without a woman’s consent, removing a woman from the workplace changes nothing because that male will seek sexual assault elsewhere if he thinks he is entitled….and the military will take action against that male. The world is not “women free” so eventually the perpetrator has to face the music even after his “women free dream Marine Corps” service that we live in an integrated world of gender, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation, etc and we do not get to pick the world around us for our personal comfort level or to help us control our inner demon. The last person who tried that was Hitler and history tells us how that turned out. Be a good Marine, focus on your job, and take responsibility for your inner predator actions; don’t blame your coworkers for your inability to control yourself in the workplace,

    4. Fuck you you stupid piece of shit. You basically just said it was okay to commit sexual harassment. You’re one step away from being a rapist.

    5. Seems like these Boys decided to forget integrity and honor. These men are not gentlemen! 3000 men in the group. Not one reported the posts? 3000 men that may have daughters some day that may want to join the military like daddy. That was someone’s daughter you posted nudes of! Which in time could eventually happen to YOUR DAUGHTER so think about that Pricks.

    6. First and foremost let me get one thing clear…. this idiot 1) Doesn’t speak on behalf of the former members of MU “Marines United” 2) Is looking for his 15 minutes of fame like the rest of the club painting what MU was designed to be via what they have portrayed it to be. What many people seem to realize is that what is being spread out in the news right now is completely false. Out of the 30K Marines that were on this page a whooping 500 people accessed the drive that I agree was illegal if used for revenge porn. If anyone did anything dealing with revenge porn just to accomplish humiliating someone and getting back act them then I agree there are consequences for their actions . However all these women coming forward are women that posted these videos and photos on line or on their Instagram. A simple google search will show the photos they post up and videos as well. Publicly shared photos and videos. Nothing private.

    7. The title of this article is very misleading and not at all what the guy was talking about. I think USMC life needs to revise its title to reflect what the guy actually said and not use it for click bait.

    8. “Women shouldn’t serve, blah blah blah…”

If you can’t handle serving with women, or other people you don’t like for that matter, how on Earth do you expect to be able to work and live with them when it’s time to hang up the uniform? If you’re utterly incapable of treating your fellow Marines/Soldiers/Sailors with a basic level of respect and dignity, maybe it’s YOU that shouldn’t be serving!

    9. This guy wants an all male environment so that he doesn’t have to compete with women for male attention. Those are exclusively the ones who try to push women out of male dominated arenas. Closeted types.

    10. thank god someone as the “balls” (pun intended) to speak the truth, to bad the commandant didn’t have them to tell the Senators “to fucking bad! this is what you! get for forcing social experimentation on the corps” “do you want killers or gender sensitivity?” he just sat there and cowered to them, it was pathetic. The unwanted pregnancies, the harassment, NJPs, counselings, all the PROBLEMS! far out weigh the minuscule benefits of woman serving. So a “few” woman can feel good about them selves SO WHAT! What hypocrisy, we celebrate Chesty “Take me to the Brig. I want to see the real Marines.” Puller, Pappy Boyington and others knowing they would be ostracized and probably kicked out today. Political correctness has polluted the officers rank. Personally I would rather see them just disband the Corps especially now that they’re trying to recruit millennials. The new Marine Corps Motto: “We can kill you we just can offend you while we do it” (eye roll)
