A Camp Lejeune Marine is being held at Craven County Jail, accused of running over a Navy Corpsman and a civilian who were in a tent in the Croatan National Forest.

On Friday, Craven County deputies responded to the Catfish Lake Road area in the forest in response to a call about two injured individuals. The two had been camping in a tent when the tent was struck by a truck driven by Alfredo Junior Morales and in which Johnathon Chicas was a passenger. Both were from the Camp LeJeune barracks. The men then fled the scene but were picked up at Lejeune by base authorities and turned over to the sheriff’s office.

The truck was seized as evidence and, based on evidence collected at the scene and through interviews, Morales and Chicas were both charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Further charges are pending.

The victims were both transported to CarolinaEast and from there to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville in serious condition. Both are expected to recover.
