A US Marine who saved two people on a San Diego freeway two months was killed riding his motorcycle on the Interstate last week.

Sergeant Gary Wilson was killed on November 16, splitting lanes during heavy traffic conditions when he struck a minivan and lost control.

Wiping out and striking a semi truck, the Marine Drill Instructor was ejected off of his bike and landed on the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to 10 News, Wilson became a national hero on September 18, after he saved two people from a fiery crash, breaking a window and dragging one woman out of the vehicle before moving on to the second one.

“I had my jacket on and didn’t think about it. I just broke the window and pulled her out,” Wilson said at the time. “I was doing my job as a Marine. We’re here to serve the people. Not just during war time, but all the time.”

Wilson’s actions were recounted by Kristina Hill, who witnessed the incident.

“When I looked up, Gary Wilson was walking towards the car very stoically, quickly, no kind of emotion on his face. He walked right up to the car and busted out the window with his elbow. He reached in and pulled the woman out and cradled her to safety. It was sort of like right out of a movie.”

Wilson’s actions were akin to those of Bruce Willis’ character in the 2000 film Unbreakable, using superhuman like strength to free the victims from a fiery death.

“I just hope he knows that his life was so important and that he touched so many people and I’m going to share his story all my life,” Hill told NBC San Diego.

Assigned to the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Wilson’s passing has been felt across the installation.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sgt. Wilson,” said MCRD San Diego commander Brigadier General Ryan Heritage. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult period. This is truly the loss of a fine Marine, and he will be missed greatly.”
