The US Marines have identified the master sergeant who drowned in late September off the coast of San Diego.
Master Sergeant Jeff Briar, a member of the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group’s headquarters battalion, reportedly drowned while saving two children, who had been swept away by the tide.
According to the Marine Corps Times, his mother, Debbie Robinson, claimed her son was at a “promise ceremony” with his girlfriend of two years at the time of the incident.
The news conflicted with reports given on a GoFundMe page dedicated to Briar, which claimed that the children belonged to him and that he was getting married.
“He is not married…there is no marriage license,” Robinson said. “He did not save his girlfriend’s children he saved two children.”
The GoFundMe page, his mother stated, is a fraudulent page that has no relation to Briar.
Both children were safely brought ashore, but Briar did not survive.
