A Marine veteran was shot in a residential area of East Oakland Monday evening according to local authorities.

Police discovered 23 -year-old Kristopher Killian on the 2600 block of Humbolt Avenue at 7:20 p.m. suffering from gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Marine veteran enlisted in 2011 after graduating high school.

His friends remembered Killian as a jokester and easy going guy.

“He was always happy and smiling,” said Julia Stuck, a 23-year-old North Carolina resident who was stationed in Pensacola, Fla., with Killian. “He always made everyone happy and laugh when he was around.”

Killian’s family created a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral costs.
