A 24-year-old Marine veteran was killed after trying to stop a carjacker in Oak Park, a neighborhood in Chicago.
Marine veteran Christopher Florez and his girlfriend Veronica Licea left their 2016 Dodge Challenge running while checking out their local around 6:40 p.m., according to ABC7
They noticed a man get into the driver’s seat of their car. Florez ran after the car, grabbing the steering wheel to stop the carjacking. He was drug down the street away from the view of his girlfriend.
“He was holding onto it because he wanted I guess to turn it around or for the driver to crash. I don’t know what he was trying to do I just know that he was trying to stop the car,” Licea said.Eventually, he was thrown from the car and died three hours later at Loyola University Medical center.
Police happened upon the vehicle and began pursuing it, eventually locating the abandoned vehicle in the 5500-block of West Monroe.
“I’m feeling a lot of things because it wasn’t supposed to happen like this, he wasn’t supposed to leave like that. He was too young,” said Licea.
Police are looking for a black man between the ages of 30 and 40 with a thin build and short braids, according to witness statements. At the time, he was wearing a black sweater.
