A US Marine veteran is set to go on trial today for the death of a fellow Marine’s 19-year-old pregnant wife.

27-year-old Christopher Brandon Lee is currently charged with one felony count of  murder, with the possible enhancement of sentence by having intentionally killed the victim by means of lying in wait.

19-year-old Erin Corwin of Twentynine Palms went missing on June 28, 2014, with her husband -Marine Corporal Jonathan Wayne Corwin- reporting her missing the following day.

Following an intensive 300 square mile search for Corwin, her corpse was found two months later, located in a remote 140-foot mine shaft in the desert outside of Twentynine Palms. Lee was arrested in Anchorage, Alaska and extradited back to San Bernardino County to face legal repercussions.

Investigators later discovered that Corwin and Lee had partaken in an affair, which could be traced as far back as February of that year.

While Lee has pleaded not guilty to the charges, he could face the death penalty if convicted.

According to The Sun, the case is currently being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sean Daugherty, a member of the District Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit.
