The circumstances surrounding a US Marine who was murdered alongside his Canadian girlfriend in Belize are still a mystery, with over a year having passed since their decomposing corpses turned up near a sugar cane field.

The bodies of 36-year-old Marine veteran Drew DeVoursney and 52-year-old girlfriend Francesca Matus were reportedly bound and strangled a week after they disappeared from Scotty’s Bar and Grill in Corozal.

The man who found them -local farmer Demetrio Yam- recalled finding them on the road beside his cane fields, the overwhelming and unmistakable stench of human decomposition leading him to their remains.

Nothing was stolen from their bodies, giving a reason for authorities to rule out robbery as the motive.

At 6’6 in height, DeVoursney was no easy man to take down, let alone tie up. All in all, not a lot of how -or why- they were killed makes any sense.

“There has been nothing — no closure for the families,” said Colin McGowan, a Scottish expatriate who is co-owner of Scotty’s Bar and Grill.

Marine veteran-turned commercial fisherman Brandon Barfield was DeVoursney’s best friend and roommate- in an effort to cherish his memory, his slain friend’s room in Florida’s West Palm Beach has been kept exactly how it was left when he saw his friend for the last time.

“He was my brother,” said Barfield, who served with DeVoursney in Fallujah. “I think about him every day.”

According to WSBTV, the U.S. State Department referred questions about the investigation to Belizean authorities, though attempts to contact Belize’s police department and the prime minister’s office turned up empty.

The FBI is continuing to investigate the murder, albeit in cooperation with Belizean authorities. As of this time, no charges have been brought against anyone in connection to the double murder.
