JACKSONVILLE, NC – A Marine was arrested in a 37-year-old cold case murder in Onslow County dating back to 1979.

Roger Pollard is being accused of murdering Karen Johnson, a 20-year-old, on April 19, 1979. He made his first court appearance on Monday in Onslow County Court after being arrested in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Roger Pollard served in the same unit at Camp Lejeune as Karen Johnson’s husband, Gary Johnson, though Johnson was deployed when his wife was beaten and strangled to death.

Authorities announced that they had suspected Pollard from the beginning, but didn’t have enough evidence to charge him. Now thanks to advances in technology, investigators were able to secure new evidence and witnesses to finally arrest Pollard.
