An active-duty who showed up at the Corps Air Station Beaufort’s gate early Thursday morning with multiple gunshot wounds told investigators he was shot while sitting in his vehicle in the Seabrook area, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
“At approximately 4 a.m. (Thursday) a U.S. stationed at MCAS Beaufort arrived at the front gate of the air station with multiple gunshot wounds,” air station spokesman Capt. Clayton Groover wrote in an air station statement Thursday morning. “The was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, is currently in stable condition, and there are no details on the events that led to the incident.”
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is assisting the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the agency leading the investigation, Groover said.
“They (the Corps) reported it to the Sheriff’s Office and the only thing we have at this point is that he was in his car somewhere in the Seabrook area and was shot,” said Sherrif’s Office spokesman Lt. Col. Bill Neill. “And he’s providing a statement and the investigators are trying to determine the exact area he was shot in Seabrook.”
The was shot in the torso, according to Neill. There are no suspects at this time, he said.
Neill said that the told investigators he was shot while sitting in his vehicle somewhere in Seabrook before he drove himself to the air station. Neill added that the vehicle has no bullet holes.
Investigators are currently interviewing the to better determine the location of the shooting, Neill said.
“Our priority right now is to provide support for the injured , and our thoughts and prayers are for a full and speedy recovery,” Groover said. “Safety of our service members and their families is paramount at MCAS Beaufort, and we will continue to support the investigation as we seek clarity on why one of our was injured.”
