A 21-year-old Marine traveling from Los Angeles to Okinawa was detained at Taiwan International Airport on Monday after they discovered rifle ammunition in his backpack.
A police report was filed but the name of the Marine hasn’t been released. He was carrying 40 rounds of rifle ammunition according to Focus Taiwan.
The police report stated the Okinawa-based Marine was stopped by immigration officers after something suspicious was seen in his backpack at the security checkpoint luggage scanner.
The U.S. Marine told local authorities that he purchased the ammo for target practice in the States, but forgot to take them out of his bag before boarding his flight in Los Angeles, California.
Authorities have handed the Marine over to the Taoyuan Criminal Investigation Corps for further investigation.
