A cache of US Marine Corps-owned small arms burned up in a fire that erupted during a training exercise in California, officials report.

The incident took place at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, during a training exercise with the 3rd Marine Division’s 3rd Battalion.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

“We would like to thank the MWTC Fire Department for their rapid response and their quick and efficient containment of the fire,” a spokesman for 3rd Marines said in a statement.

According to the Marine Corps Times, it is unknown what caused the fire.

Several rifles, including a few M4 carbines, were casualties of the incident.

An investigation is underway.
