A US Marine was killed in a highly preventable accident at Twentynine Palms, California- leaving his pregnant wife a widow and his children without a father.
Lance Corporal Jonothan Barnette, 24, was mortally wounded after being struck in the chest by a live round during a dry fire training exercise on October 3, according to his family.
To reiterate, a dry fire [utilizing the functions of one’s service weapon for training without using ammunition] exercise went wrong after a live round was fired through what was likely assumed to be an unloaded weapon.
According to KESQ, the Naval Safety Center’s mishaps summary listed the incident in vague terms.
“3 Oct 2021 (Twenty-Nine Palms, CA) SVM received gunshot wound to chest while conducting dry fire rehearsal training. Died at scene,” the NSC Mishap Stats read, three days after the incident.
LCpl Barnett’s wife, Savannah Barnette, is pregnant with their second child.
“He will not be here to watch our daughter grow up or to be here to experience is our baby being born. It kills me every day. Every day, it kills me,” she said.
An infantryman by trade, Barnette was part of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines Kilo Company, 3rd PLT.
