An active duty Camp Pendleton Marine was killed early Sunday morning on a highly traveled interstate in southern California.

The 28-year-old Marine was reportedly seen “lying on the freeway” across the fast lane and was hit by at least two cars. This happened in the westbound lanes of I-8, near the College Area of San Diego at about 3:20 on Sunday morning.

There are still many unanswered questions about this case and the public may be able to help CHP with its investigation. One of the drivers apparently couldn’t stop in time after seeing the man and called police after realizing what happened. Another vehicle left the scene, NBC 7 reported.

CHP officials are asking for the public’s help. They say someone else may have been driving through there at that time of the morning, but perhaps did not realize they hit someone.

Officials don’t know why the man was there in the first place. There were no broken down cars in the area, so they’re not sure how he got to the interstate.

It’s possible the Marine could have been drunk or suicidal, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The Marine’s name has not yet been released.
