The US Marines have learned to tidy up their code when it comes to their recruiting website, thanks to some savvy individuals who found an “exploitable” code string on the page to make it say humorous things.
The issue became apparent after a photo circulated of the Marine website, featuring the words, “Daddy Navy Owns My Ass” in a place where super-motivational text should be.
Other examples were more homoerotic in nature, to include, “Marine Suck Weiners,” obtained by @Boottallentshow on Instagram.
“I think it was the Russians,” Hannah Kushner said of the image. “We left them a bunch of dick drawings in some of the compounds in Syria. I wonder if this is them returning gratification.”
While some initially believed the USMC page had been hacked by some shadowy entity, the reality was much more benign, yet rather amusing.
By opening up the command screen in one’s Internet browser, the text could be exploited to say whatever one could think up.
The issue appears to have been resolved by the Marine website team, and it seems to no longer be exploitable.
