Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island has identified a recruit who died after being found unresponsive Friday night.
Zachary R. , 18, of Madison, Ala., was found unconscious in his bed after 8 p.m., spokesman Capt. Gregory Carroll said Monday afternoon. He arrived on Parris Island on Sept. 19.
Emergency medical professionals responded and took to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:32 p.m. Friday.
The cause of death is still being determined, Deputy Coroner David Ott said Monday.
was assigned to the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.
Parris Island command initiated an investigation as part of standard procedure, Carroll said.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death. There are no signs of foul play, agency spokesman Ed Buice reiterated Monday.
Buice otherwise declined comment.
The recruit’s death follows the injury of another recruit who fell two stories inside a building at the depot Oct. 28. A preliminary investigation indicated the recruit jumped and that no foul play was suspected.
That recruit remained in critical condition Saturday afternoon, Carroll said.
Raheel Siddiqui, 20, a Taylor, Mich., native, died March 18 from injuries sustained after falling nearly 40 feet at the depot.
The Corps has ruled his death a suicide. Siddiqui’s family disputes that claim, according to their attorney Shiraz Khan, and worries their son may have been hazed and abused.
