US Marine Raiders (Marine Special Operations) will be competing with elite units such as the US Army Special Forces in a grueling athletic event known as the Marine Raider Challenge.
According to the Marine Raider Foundation (who came up with the event) the Marine Raider Challenge is a “12-mile start to finish endurance race” that incorporates a hike, water events and a finishing event that is led by physical training staff.
The event -which takes place on February 17 in California- will host thirty two-man buddy teams, who will be raising money for the Special Operations Forces charity of their choice.
“Current and Former Marine Raiders and Direct Support are encouraged to sign-up,” the event website reads. “We will also be accepting a limited number of NAVSOC, ARSOC, AFSOC teams to participate in the event.”
The “light at the end of the tunnel” is the after-party and the awards presentation, which will also be open to volunteers and family of the competitors.
“We wanted to promote three things: competition, camaraderie and cause,” said Retired USMC Captain Derek Herrera, in an interview with the San Clemente Times. “This physical endurance challenge is to create healthy competition for the Marine Raiders and other special operations veterans. The camaraderie aspect is to reunite current and former special operators and engage with the city of San Clemente.”
Over $600,000 has been raised so far for the event, which will kick off this Saturday.
