It was a New Year’s Eve surprise proposal — Marine Cpl Matthew Auriel surprised his girlfriend when he asked Charity Kirk for her hand in marriage at the Memphis Fire Museum.

The Marine couldn’t ask Charity’s father for her hand in marriage because Lt Trent Kirk had been killed in a fire in 2003. Matthew wanted to honor her father by asking Charity to marry him at his  memorial at the Fire Museum, as reported by WMC in Memphis.

The couple believes Trent was there in spirit at the museum, run by the Our Fallen Heroes Foundation.

“I was a little nervous”, says Matthew. “I knew it was going to be special to her… I knew how much her dad meant to her and how much of a role model he was, so I just wanted to involve him in any way I could think of”, he continued.

Auriel would be returning to his duty station after the holidays and wanted to ask Kirk to marry him, not knowing when and if he’ll leave for deployment.

“I was just focused on her… I wanted to kinda make it special for her and involve him in some way. The best way I could think of would be here”, says the Marine.

Charity was ecstatic about the engagement saying, “It’s very special to know that he was able to be  incorporated in it in some way.”
