A Rio Rancho Marine spotted something lying on the highway. He pulled over and picked it up, turns out it was an American flag.
“She is in bad shape here.” retired Marine Jeremy Hollars, in his interview with KOAT Albuquerque.
“It’s pretty much the same as seeing one of your brothers or sisters lying there on the ground. You wouldn’t want to leave anyone behind, so I had to go back and get her” the veteran said.
He rescued Old Glory from the middle of a busy road on Saturday. He noticed red and white stripes on the pavement.
“I just assumed that it was a flag laying there, so I wasn’t going to keep driving without knowing for sure” Jeremy remarked.
This weekend Hollars and some fellow Marines will lay the flag to rest with a Flag Retirement Service and Ceremony.
