MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A standoff lasting more than eight hours finally came to an end Sunday with a Marine in custody.

A one-mile portion of the highway was closed during the standoff, according to WSOC.

Officials determined that the Marine had previously been involved in a domestic dispute earlier at a nearby apartment complex before he fled the scene and was involved in a car chase with Catawba County deputies.

The Marine has only been identified as a 26-year-old active-duty Marine.

“The suspect did have a weapon and was threatening to harm himself or others,” Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said.

Police used a “flash bang” distraction in conjunction with tear gas to subdue the man, where he was taken into custody and later transported for medical care.

“I’m proud of the job our guys have done,” Campbell said. “No guns were fired. He was taken into custody.”

Investigators have not released the identity of the man involved, nor provided the charges he will face.
