A Marine was fatally shot early Sunday morning, April 17, in the parking lot of a San Bernadino strip club, according to a local police news release.

The 20-year-old Marine has since been identified as PFC Douglas Rivas-Rauda, according to the Press-Enterprise. He hails from Baltimore, Maryland and was stationed at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines.

Rivas-Rauda was visiting the club with several other Marines. There is no indication at this time that an altercation had taken place.

Rivas was a squad leader at Parris Island, according to the news source, and was known as “Rivas”.

“I have to say without Rivas, I wouldn’t be a Marine today,” said 19-year-old Taeon Saunders, now stationed in Washington, D.C. “… He was just one of those guys, one in a million, as a person and as a Marine. If Douglas crossed your path, you’re a lucky person.”

Police and Fire services were called to the Flesh Club Showgirls in San Bernadino at 2:12 a.m. Sunday, Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said in the statement. First responders arrived and discovered the victim suffered from numerous gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m.

The Marine Corps released a statement: “The death of Private First Class Rivas-Rauda is a tragedy for his family and for our unit,” McFadden said via email. “Our leadership, chaplains and families have come together in support. We deeply appreciate all the support and sympathy that we have received for this loss.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call investigators at 909-384-5626 or 909-384-5615.
