An active duty Marine officer was in critical condition after being shot while training at a night live-fire range at Pohakuloa Training Area in Hawaii.
The Marine who has yet to be identified belongs to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines from Camp Pendleton, California according to Stripes.
Originally in critical condition after being medivac-ed to Hilo Medical center at 11:05 pm on July 12th, the Marine is now listed in stable condition at Tripler Army Medical Center according to military officials.
The Marine officer was shot in the hip where the bullet fragmented upon impact, according to Stripes.
The training occurred as part of a three-ship training group which left California and stopped in Hawaii before heading to the Western Pacific for deployment.
Military officials announced that an investigation is currently underway and that Privacy Act concerns compel her not to release any additional information.
“The command extends their gratitude to the responding medical team of U.S. Army Garrison Pohakuloa for their swift medical treatment and assistance to the 15th MEU’s corpsman,” military spokesperson Zheng stated in an email.
The US Army is responsible for the 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area which various military branches utilize. The Marine was medivac-ed on an Army Black Hawk helicopter according to military officials.
