Marine corporal accused of intentionally setting restaurant on fire while drunk

A Marine from Camp Pendleton has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to a restaurant in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.

A spokesperson for the San Diego Fire Department said 21-year-old Austin K. Kokin was seen vandalizing the Blue Point Coastal Cuisine restaurant and setting multiple fires out back.

Kokin is assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 372, Marine Aircraft Group 39, which spoke to NBC 7 about the incident.

The Wing said they “take allegations of this nature very seriously.”

Firefighters said the fire was started in a storage room near the back of the resaurant just before 2 a.m. -shortly after they closed.

The fire was eventually put out by the restaurant’s sprinkler system but cause and estimated $25,000 in damage, according to NBC7.

San Diego police arrested and charged Kokin with burglary, arson and vandalism on Thursday.

He is in the San Diego Central Jail with a $150,000 bond and set to be arraigned on Friday, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s online records.
