A Camp Lejeune Marine had arguably one of the best winter holidays ever — winning $100,000 from the lottery.
Marine Micky Simons won $100,000 after playing the North Carolina’s Education Lottery’s Millionaire 7’s scratch-off ticket, as reported by JD News.
At first Simons didn’t realize he’d won big with the $10 scratch-off ticket. The 25 year Marine veteran brought it back to the store where he’d purchased it and asked the clerk to scan it, according to a N.C. Lottery press release.
“When she started screaming, that’s when I knew I won,” Simons said via the release.
Simons and his wife, Lasha, turned the ticket into lottery headquarters on New Year’s Eve to claim their prize.
“I didn’t believe it until now,” she said in the release.
All told, the Marine family is taking home $69,253 — the amount left after state and federal tax withholdings. What will the family do with the money? Simons told lottery officials that he’s taking his family on vacation and more importantly, will become debt-free prior to his planned retirement from the Corps in 2017.
