A US Marine from New Mexico is behind bars after law enforcement investigators found sufficient evidence to charge him with the statutory rape of a minor.
Investigators say 20-year-old Derrick Stanley had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl earlier this year, taking full advantage of her while he was home on leave in Albuquerque.
Stanley was based out of North Carolina, KRQE reports.
The girl reportedly met Stanley while he was still a senior in high school, and the relationship had been budding for some time.
The illicit couple was found out after the girl’s father discovered text messages on her phone that raised red flags.
Stanley was arrested upon his return to Albuquerque.
