A Marine veteran couple are facing the music after allegedly tormenting and stalking a young woman, including sending pornographic photos of her to her own parents.
The married couple -identified as former 2nd Lieutenant Vincent Provines and former U.S. Marine Reserve Lance Corporal Cesaria “Cecy” Marquez- were found guilty of cyberstalking last week in the Sherman Division of the U.S. District Court for Eastern Texas, with the former being found guilty of the charge and the latter taking a plea deal, earning her five years of probation.
The couple are currently in the middle of divorce litigation.
The victim was a young woman -whose name was withheld to protect her identity- whose photos had ended up in the hands of Provines (and later Marquez) after the woman became romantically involved with the officer in 2014. The two would break up a year later, with Provines marrying Marquez in September of 2016.
“I’m sorry for what I did, I really am,” the woman said of the affair. “I wish I could go back. It was the biggest mistake of my life to do that, and it was wrong of me.”
Only a few months after marrying his bride, Provines reached out to his ex-girlfriend and the former lovers reunited, having sex twice in December. During that time, she sent him another nude photo of herself.
Less than one week after the affair, the victim’s parents informed her that they received an email from Provines’ Yahoo! Email account, containing nude photos and revealing that the two had had sex.
According to Newsweek, the woman’s father made a deal with Provines, agreeing to never speak of the matter again in exchange for destroying the photos.
Marquez, however, wasn’t satisfied.
Setting up a Yahoo! account in her husband’s name, she began harassing the woman, saying that she would put her “ugly ass nude pictures everywhere and watch you burn… You’re not sorry. Yet. But I’ll make sure you will be.”
“I’m not to be trifled with,” Marquez wrote the woman on Facebook Messenger. “Making Vince tell your dad was purely for my entertainment. You don’t want to see what I’ll do to ruin you.”
According to Newsweek, Provines told the woman he never sent the photos to begin with, emphasizing his estranged wife did all the dirty work.
“I just wanted to tell you that I didn’t know that I had those pictures,” Provines wrote to her. “I knew I had two of them. I’m sorry they got sent to your parents. I didn’t want to do that. She took my things and did that. The pictures don’t exist. I don’t have any of them. I don’t post them to anything. I never have. I’m sorry that I didn’t treat you or her right.”
Now 23 years old, the victim said that she is okay that Marquez took a plea deal, noting that she wanted to see Provines punished.
In addition, she was relieved the USMC took action on the matter.
“The idea that the [Marine Corps] would do nothing was crushing,” she said. “This process is draining because it’s gone on for so long and the thought of no action is overwhelming. I don’t want this whole thing to be all for nothing.”
Provines faces a possible maximum sentence of five years in prison; a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised probation.
