A Camp Lejeune Marine will be receiving the nation’s third-highest honor for valor this year.
MARSOC Marine Sgt. Andrew Seif, 27, of Holland, Michigan, is scheduled to receive the Silver Star in March, said Capt. Barry Morris, a public affairs officer for MARSOC.
According to the award citation, Seif is being awarded for his actions in Afghanistan in July 2012. Seif, a member of Marine Special Operations Company H, Special Operations Task Force-West at the time, was part of a small team conducting a cordon and search operation to “remove a high-value target,” which was a person known as western Afghanistan’s expert in improvised explosive devices.
During the mission, the team came under enemy fire and a fellow Marine was wounded by gunfire, according to the citation. Despite the danger, Seif immediately rendered aid to his injured teammate before moving alone across the compound to apprehend the person of interest and completing the mission.
“By his bold initiative, undaunted courage and complete dedication to duty, Sergeant Seif reflected a great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service,” according to the citation.
Seif also was named USO’s Marine of the Year in 2013.
