Police are investigating a heartbreaking crime against a Marine veteran who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

According to state police, 90 year old Canio Digerardo’s home in Pennsylvania was broken into and the burglar took off with his war service medals, including the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device he was awarded from his service in Iwo Jima, and several other military artifacts and awards. The family is thankful the burglar left other photos inside the home and sand brought back from Iwo Jima.

It appears the burglar forced open the sliding glass door to gain entry in the home while Digerardo was away. Police and family members are urging anyone with information to call the Pennsylvania State Police in Fern Ridge.
