An unknown intruder managed to gain entry into a US Military base in Okinawa, Japan, cutting a fence and detonating a pair of gas canisters outside of a building where several local government officials were billeted.
The incident took place on Sunday evening, in a remote compound across from the main base.
A photo of the device used appears to have been made from camping stove gas canisters and cardboard and was used to target the bureau which represents Japan’s Ministry of Defense on Okinawa.
“This incident is currently under investigation by both the USMC Criminal Investigation Division, and the Okinawa Prefectural Police,” Marine Corps Installations Pacific spokesman Maj. Andrew Aranda told Stars and Stripes. “It would be premature to comment on any details at this time.”
Okinawa has long had an abrasive relationship with US and Japanese military personnel, and anti-military acts of vandalism are not terribly uncommon.
