How to help the service members of the USS Fitzgerald

YOKOSUKA — Many service members stationed on the USS Fitzgerald lost everything in the flood — they need new uniform items and basic necessities such as wallets, personal hygiene items and more. Sara Buchholz, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society volunteer, discusses base-wide support efforts for USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62).

The Fitzgerald was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel but returned to Fleet Activities (FLEACT) Yokosuka under its own power. Seven service members died in the accident.

For those looking to donate items to the Sailors on the USS Fitzgerald, please send uniform items such as:

  • Blousing straps
  • Blue NWU T-shirts
  • Socks
  • Dress white items
  • Blueberries
  • Seabags
  • Boots
  • Chapstick and sunblock

Many of these families will need financial help as well — please consider donating to the Marine Corps Relief Society.

You may also opt to mail items to your local USO or mail directly to:
