A Marine veteran in North Carolina has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to a gunning down his wife in front of their children.
Christopher Skaggs pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Tuesday, a just end to the grisly 2014 murder of his wife, Jordan Skaggs.
“We are glad that he will never see the light of day again. It is the least that he deserves after what he has done to our daughter,” said Melody Coffey, the victim’s mother.
In July of 2014, Skaggs reportedly became tired of his wife’s “nagging” and decided to shoot her fifteen times while their children were inside of the home.
According to WNCT, Mrs. Skaggs was shot in the back and a subsequent autopsy revealed signs of prior domestic violence.
Skaggs was 60 days out from being medically retired from the US Marines, having been diagnosed with severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The Marine veteran ultimately pleaded guilty, partially out of remorse and also to keep his kids from having to testify.
“He made a good choice today,” District Attorney Ernie Lee said. “He didn’t make good choices in the past but I’m glad on behalf of this family that those children don’t have to testify.”
Skaggs is requesting that he serve his sentence at the Maury Correctional Institution’s Veterans’ Cell Block.
