It was a freak accident Friday that killed Lance Corporal Cody Haley. Now, his family in Iowa and his brothers are doing everything possible to bring his Marine family to his home state for his funeral service.

Haley died when a tree landed on him during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton. In response, his fellow Marines set a cross on a large hilltop in California and held their own wake, where they sang and played guitar.

That’s not all they did, they also set up a GoFundMe page hoping to raise money so they could fly to Iowa for the funeral.

Cody’s mom tells WQAD News words cannot describe what it will mean to have the men her son served with by her family’s side her son’s service.

“Words cannot describe how much it would mean to me if they want to come back for Cody’s funeral,” Mrs. Haley tells WQAD News. “I want to do everything in my power to help do that.”

WQAD News reports a date hasn’t been set Cody’s funeral service, but the town of Eldora continues to raise money for his funeral.

As of Wednesday, Cody’s family has raised $37,795 through Marine Parents to bring his Marine family to their son’s funeral.

Since the family reached its initial goal, any additional money donated will go to the fund the family has established in their hometown. The money will be used for any additional expenses they may incur and/or as the family deems appropriate to establish a memorial or trust in Lance Corporal Cody Haley’s name.
