The F-35B Lightning II had its first ever expeditionary test during Exercise Steel Knight 2015.
The aircraft reached initial operational capability in July 2015 and
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, part of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, becoming the first operational squadron in the military to have the F-35.
