A Marine Lance Corporal is no doubt doing serious amounts of push-ups after he got his artillery unit “killed” during an exercise- by taking a selfie that gave away his location.

The incident, which took place at Twentynine Palms training center in California, involved several branches of the US military and NATO partners. With a variety of operational tempos, the training exercise was a lesson in many disciplines- including how to avoid giving away one’s position on social media.

“A Marine in that exercise took a selfie of him being bored,” said Lt. Gen. Lori Reynolds, the Marine Corps’ deputy commandant of information. “It showed in that selfie it was an artillery unit. You could go geo-locate him, and you could see what unit it was.

“They were like, ‘OK, you guys are dead.'”

According to Military.com, the incident served as somewhat of a reminder of why the 82nd Airborne Division were recently barred from bringing personal electronics and communications devices with them to a staging area in the Middle East.

Retired Marine Commandant General Robert Neller lamented the addiction young Marines have in relation to technology, particularly since they are vulnerable to exploitation by enemy forces.

“You’re going to dig a hole, you’re going to camouflage, you’re going to turn off all your stuff,” he said. “… Because if you can be seen, you can be attacked.”
